Catamaran kite safaris

catamaran kite safari srilankaStarting from Kitesurfing Lanka and ending at our Vayu resort in Talaimannar, our catamaran based kite safaris are a luxurious way to see the best and emptiest spots Sri Lanka has to offer. Along with our professional guides/advanced coaches you can explore secluded flat water spots, enjoy rolling ocean swell, find hidden reef breaks, kite alongside the unspoiled jungle of Wilpattu national park, and progress your riding all along the way, always knowing you have safety backup if something goes wrong. As if that wasn’t enough you get to finish the day staying on board our yacht, with all the comforts of home and an amazing staff to make sure you have an unforgettable experience!

Our catamaran provides 3 cabins, 2 double and one triple for a total of 7 guests maximum, meaning the spots will never be crowded and you’ll get plenty of face to face instruction with Zac and Ola, our advanced instructor couple. Each day will consist of some downwind time in the morning, usually 2-3 hours depending on the riding speed of the group, then lunch on the boat before kiting all afternoon at an amazing spot, with Zac and Ola on hand to give advice, coaching and take awesome photos you can enjoy after your holiday!

Our typical daily schedule looks like this:

Day 1:

AM: Downwind from KSL to Vella island ~30km – around half open ocean riding and half shallow flat sections

PM: Coaching – super flat water awesomeness

Day 2:

AM: Downwind from Vella to our secret paradise ~40km – open ocean with occasional flat water spots

PM: Coaching – incredible Wilpattu national park on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other

Day 3:

AM: Downwind to Vayu resort ~40km – open ocean

PM: Coaching – steady wind and flat water all the way to India….seriously

If you’re not keen on kiting downwind and just want to save yourself for the flat water, or you have a mixed group and some people are not as comfortable with kiting long distance, you can spend your mornings enjoying a leisurely cruise on board the boat and join the rest for the flat water and coaching after lunch. We can fully customise our trips to suit your needs, as we realize different people want different things.

A word about riding levels:

For these downwind legs, you need to be a reasonably good kiter, and comfortable in the open ocean with swell and strong wind. A bare minimum is being able to kite upwind, recover your board in deep water, ride toeside, relaunch your kite quickly, and do a deep water packdown in an emergency. There will be a rescue boat on hand, but it will not always be able to reach you in the few seconds between you making a mistake and having to decide what to do about it! We will be kiting over 100km over the 3 days, so a reasonable level of kitesurfing fitness is necessary, and we promise you will feel the burn after a few days hard riding.

For the coaching at all stops the only required level is riding upwind, so even if you’re not comfortable with the downwind rides you can still join in and enjoy the sessions!

The trips:

We realise people have different schedules so we’ve tried to come up with a couple versions of this trip that will suit most people. If you have something else in mind (i.e a couple nights at Vella instead) then please do get in touch and we can organise a bespoke trip exactly according to your idea. And the only fixed dates we advertise are for the downwinders themselves, we have camps on both ends so we are flexible with the number of nights in Kitesurfing Lanka or Vayu

  • The first option is for a full week so 6 nights in total. You spend the first night in Kalpitiya resting after your arrival in Sri Lanka, then 3 days down winding from Kalpitiya to Vayu (2 nights on board the catamaran), and then the following 3 nights at Vayu, our camp on Adam’s bridge near Mannar where you can enjoy pretty much endless flat water to your hearts desire! The 3 days downwind includes guidance, clinic style coaching, photos and videos with Zac and Ola
  • The second option is for those with a limited time frame who just want to come and have an adventure, it’s the perfect choice for those long weekend kiting getaways. It starts the same as the week long trip, so 1 night in Kalpitiya, followed by 2 nights on the catamaran and 3 days of downwind for a total of 3 nights before you’re off home again. Again all coaching etc is included in the price
  • The third option is to design your own trip, so please contact us directly for a special private package! If you want to organize a group to fill the boat, you get your trip for 50%!

Please note as we have double and triple cabins, single travelers will end up sharing a cabin with someone else and may end up bunking on a double bed if the boat is completely full (you will have your own sheets!), or you can sleep on deck under the stars!

Price:

These prices are room and full board either in the camps or on board the catamaran, 3 meals per day plus water/tea/coffee (soft drinks and alcohol not included). All transfers to and from the airport are included, plus professional advanced coaching, photos and videos of your time with us. The price is per person and based on two sharing, please contact us for pricing on private trips and special requests.

1 week package: €1200 per person OR €2300 per double cabin

3 nights package: €800 per person OR €1500 per double cabin
