The ancient city of Polonnaruwa UNESCO World Heritage Site (1982)
Kings ruled over Sri Lanka’s central plains from Polonnaruwa around 800 years ago. Polonnaruwa was a commercial and religious center. The glories of that age can be found in archaeological wonders build on the site! Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993. Polonnaruwa was established as the first city of the land in the 11th Century, A.D. It replaced Anuradhapura, plundered made desolate, and laid hopelessly bare to the invading armies from South India. Many Kings ruled over the city, all of them leaving their marks!
The city reached a zenith in the 12th century and was ravaged by invasion in the centuries following, much evidence remains of the old grandeur and glory.
As the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century.
Royal palaceThis capital is one of the history’s most amazing urban creations, because of its unusual dimensions and because of the very special relationship of its buildings with the natural setting. It is also a shrine of Buddhist and of Sinhalese history. The tooth of the Lord Buddha, a remarkable relic placed in the Atadage under Vijabayahu, was considered as the talisman of the Sinhalese monarchy: its removal by Bhuvanaikabahu II confirmed the decline of Polonnaruwa.
Plenty more of excursions and trips to Sri Lanka’s highlights are organized by the Vayu Resort team.
